What to expect in budget speech

Things might be interesting in the upcoming Mid-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) by Minister Mr Enoch Godongwana as for the first time in 30 years; South Africa is in a Government of National Unity (GNU).

The Minister of Finance Mr Enoch Godongwana will today, Wednesday, 30 October 2024, at 14: 00 deliver his MTBPS, where he is expected to reflect on how the economy of South Africa is flaring under the GNU and what the outlook is.

The Rand, since the inception of the GNU has been firm against the US Dollar; we have seen fuel prices drop in consecutive months however; the cost of leaving is still high. The Minister is also expected to make departmental budget adjustments.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Minister for Basic Education Ms Siviwe Gwarube has already made a call for a budget increase for her department in order to achieve her goals, this remain to be seen if Minister Enoch Godongwana will grant the request.

Godongwana is also expected to make some emergency changes to spending. Some of the State owned entities have called for business rescue, will the Minister grant this and what will it mean for the SOEs and their employees?

During the same sitting, the minister is also scheduled to table the Adjustments Appropriation Bill, the Rates and Monetary Amounts and Amendment of Revenue Laws Bill, the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill, the Division of Revenue Amendment Bill, and the Tax Administration Laws Amendment Bill.
