Unlocking State Assets: KZN and National Leaders Debut Property Finding Portal to Drive Growth

In a major push toward economic transparency and asset optimization, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC of Public Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Lukas Marthinus Meyer, and Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr. John Steenhuisen, are set to launch the KZN Public Works and Infrastructure Property Finding Portal on Wednesday, 7 October.

This high-profile launch marks a pivotal next phase in provincial asset management. It follows a comprehensive audit of all 10,067 assets owned by KZN Public Works and Infrastructure, alongside the initial release of 81 unused buildings and land parcels to the general public.

Fostering Transparency and Private Sector Collaboration

The newly developed portal, hosted live on the department’s website, represents a decisive step toward absolute transparency in state property management. Economists and industry stakeholders have long advocated for better utilization of government-owned real estate to stimulate local development.

By bridging the gap between the state and the private sector, the portal empowers non-governmental organizations (NGOs), commercial developers, and private investors to easily identify available state assets.

Crucially, the platform invites stakeholders to propose innovative ways to utilize these properties under flexible operational models. These include long-term leases, property repurposing, and commercial optimization designed to drive local economic activity and benefit residents directly.

Empowering Citizens and Driving Local Transformation

Beyond commercial acquisition, the portal introduces a vital public accountability mechanism. Ordinary residents can utilize the platform to log complaints or inquiries regarding the physical state and maintenance of any asset managed by KZN Public Works and Infrastructure, ensuring that community oversight matches government accountability.

Following the live demonstration and launch event, MEC Meyer and Deputy Minister Steenhuisen will conduct a high-level site visit to a previously underutilized public asset. This location has been successfully transformed into a thriving skills development hub, proving the tangible economic value of repurposing state property to create sustainable jobs and opportunities for the region’s youth.

As regional authorities continue to leverage public infrastructure for broader economic inclusion, this portal sets a new benchmark for governance, public-private partnerships, and asset management in South Africa.
