By It was a night written in the stars at Portman Road as 16-year-old academy prodigy Max Dowman put on a master-class, bagging a brilliant double to help secure a 4-2 victory against Ipswich Town and propel us safely into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Mikel Arteta handed the teenager his first competitive start of the campaign, and it took little over six minutes for the youngster to repay that faith. Capitalizing on a high interception, Dowman combined with Ebere Eze before gliding into the box, cleverly wrong-footing Cedric Kipre and slamming an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner. At just 16 years and 258 days old, that strike made him our second-youngest scorer in the competition’s history, sitting right behind Cesc Fabregas.
We didn’t have to wait long to double our advantage. Sharp pressing from Bruno Guimaraes forced an error from the Ipswich defence, allowing Mikel Merino to clip a delicious ball over to Noni Madueke, who smashed home into the bottom corner with poise.
Dowman Enters the History Books
If the first-half opener introduced Dowman to the broader stage, his second goal cemented a stellar individual display. Just 90 seconds into the second half, Martin Zubimendi poked a deflected ball through to the teenager, who calmly slotted past Christian Walton to grab his second of the evening. In doing so, Dowman etched his name alongside elite company, becoming only the second 16-year-old to net a brace for a Premier League side in all competitions, a feat previously achieved solely by Wayne Rooney back in October 2002.
The goals kept flowing as Merino added a fourth shortly after, taking a neat touch from a Guimaraes ping before firing in expertly off the post.
Resilient Finish at Portman Road
Ipswich refused to go down quietly, staging a spirited fight-back in the second half. Jack Clarke raced down the left flank to set up Anis Mehmeti for a close-range finish in the 62nd minute. The hosts continued to apply pressure, and former Gunner Chuba Akpom carved out space in stoppage time to rifle home a second for the Tractor Boys.
Despite the late flurry, Arteta’s side successfully managed the game out, handing valuable senior minutes to debutant Theo Julienne off the bench.
With our place in the round of 16 secured, attention now shifts back to domestic matters. We head down to the south coast for our final fixture before the international break, taking on Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League this Saturday, September 19, with a 3 pm kick-off.
