PRETORIA — A dark cloud has fallen over the South African sporting fraternity following the devastating and untimely passing of two of the nation’s brightest young talents: Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, and former South African Rugby Under-18 prop Luqobo Makwedini.
The shocking news has triggered an outpouring of grief across the country, reaching the highest offices of the land. President Cyril Ramaphosa led the nation in mourning, expressing his deep condolences to the families, friends, and teammates of both athletes, who were taken well before their time at the ages of 25 and 20, respectively.

For Jayden Adams, his tragic passing comes right on the heels of a historic, bittersweet chapter on the global stage. The 25-year-old midfielder had been instrumental in Bafana Bafana’s historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, anchoring the midfield with a level of resilience that defined his character.
It was later revealed by the South African Football Association (SAFA) that Adams had been carrying an unimaginable emotional burden during the tournament. Just a day before South Africa’s crucial Group A clash against Czechia at the Atlanta Stadium, his 72-year-old grandmother, Marianna Adams, passed away in a Stellenbosch hospital.
