The President of South Africa H.E Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his congratulatory messages to the President elect of Senegal H.E Bassirou Diomaye Faye (44), on his election as the President of the Republic of Senegal.
The Senegalese have made their choice at the polls and made history while at it, the West African country have added themselves on the list of African countries headed by young leaders under the age of 50. Faye is the youngest President in Africa who won the election by a majority of 54.28%.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye treaded the path of heroes, almost similar to that of the late Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa. He went from prison to presidency. Faye’s election into power brings much hope to the Senegalese and a sense of freedom as he made bold promises, including that of breaking Senegal free from the iron grip of their colonizer France.
He promised the natives that he will work on turning the economy of the country around and rid it of the CFA Franc currency.
Joining other African leaders, President Cyril Ramaphosa on behalf of South Africa said the outcome of the election bears testimony to the resilient spirit of the Senegalese people who preferred the democratic course of change of government, through voting. Ramaphosa also acknowledged the opposition party leaders, applauding them for displaying maturity in accepting the election outcome.
“South Africa and Senegal enjoy close political, trade and social relations deepened by strong historical ties rooted from the anti-apartheid struggle,” he said.
President Ramaphosa has committed to strengthen the bilateral relationship between South Africa and Senegal in pursuit of a better and peaceful continent.
“The Senegalese people have lighten a beacon which will usher in a new hope in the journey of rebuilding Africa by opting for peaceful change of government as opposed to violence,” Said President Cyril Ramaphosa.
President Faye will be sworn into office on 2 April 2024.
