President Cyril Ramaphosa will tonight deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of the seventh administration, under the Government of National Unity (GNU), a first of its kind in 30 years.
South Africa is currently in a unique position, of which President Ramaphosa is expected to touch on. South Africa is currently the President of the G20 and is facing heat from two nations, the DRC and the United States being accused of human rights violations.
South Africa is accused of having troops in the eastern DRC because of gold mines interests, not for peacekeeping mission, while on the other hand, the second largest trade partner of the country, the United State of America (USA) is accusing South Africa of implementing laws bordering along racial lines that confiscate land arbitrarily from the white race.
Addressing the media, the Spokesperson to the Presidency Vincent Magwenya said the SONA will take place under the theme “A nation that works for all.” He said the annual event gives the nation an opportunity to reflect on how far the nation has come in working together, in building a country that it has envisioned at the start of its democracy.
“In the address, the President will outline the task of the Government of National Unity and implementing the three strategic priorities of the medium term development plan, namely, driving inclusive growth and job creation, reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living and building a capable, developmental state,” said Magwenya.
The 2025 SONA is taking place during a time South Africa is still commemorating 30 years of freedom and democracy. It will be the first that political leaders from other parties forming the GNU would have made contributions towards the President’s address.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the State of the Nation Address at 19: 00, on Thursday 6 February 2025.
