Pirates slaughter Sundowns 2 to 1

The Sea Robbers proved to be the better team on the field playing against Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium on Sunday, 16 March 2025.

The Brazilians were buried early in the match knocking their confidence to the ground. Orlando Pirates displayed intent and hunger to win the game early. From the first whistle, the Buccaneers applied pressure on Sundowns in search of an early goal.

Making brilliant runs and some impressive foot-work, from a cutback in the Brazilian box, Relebohile Mofokeng with a first touch scored the first goal of the match in 4th minute of the game.

Mofokeng was not done for the day, making a run into the box; he put the ball past the defence and beating the Sundowns keeper Ronwen Williams in the far right upright scoring his second in the 5th minute of the game.

The Brazilians had to dig deep to gain their confidence back, they had multiple threatening opportunities in the first half but it was not meant be.

The game went to break with Orlando Pirates leading Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0.

In the second half, the game was a bit heavy for Mamelodi Sundowns but they managed to resist the pressure from the Soweto giants Orlando Pirates, denying them an opportunity to extend their lead. Mamelodi Sundowns launched an offensive against the Buccaneers and were rewarded in the 66th minute when Khuliso Modau made a run through two defenders and scored a goal for his team.

Modau seemed to be offside but the flag stayed down, the goal was added to the score sheet.

The Sea Robbers searched for another goal, dominating the game but soon ran out of time. The game ended with Pirates leading 2-1.

Pirates is currently sitting on position two on the PSL log with 43 points, while Sundowns is number one with 58 points.
