Mayor Nthatisi unveil R55 million fleet

The Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) Cllr Gregory Nthatisi unveiled a total of 31 service delivery vehicles on Tuesday, 14 May 2024, in Bloemfontein at the headquarters of the municipality.

Nthatisi says the municipality, through the approval of National Treasury, used R55 million from the Urban Settlement Development Grant to procure the fleet to address service delivery issues the City is faced with. He said the acquisition of the fleet is indicative that the metro is stabilising.

Gregory Nthatisi told the media that service delivery is a key priority for the leadership in the City.

“There are eleven trucks collecting waste in the City and I would like to applaud the officials who are committed in ensuring that waste is collected.

While this new fleet is a step in the right direction, we still have a long way to go before we attain the required fleet to ensure that there are no service delivery challenges in the City,” said the Executive Mayor.

According to Sello More, the Municipal Manager of Mangaung Metro, services delivery experience’s challenges and collapse due to the lack of fleet availability to the metro. More said the City received its first batch of fleet of eight vehicles from the Department of Environmental Affairs last year November; the current fleet is a second batch.

“We need fleet in order to carry out our primary function as the City, which is service delivery. In order to collect waste, fix water leakages and attend to sewerage spillages, we need to have sufficient fleet,” said Sello More.

The Executive Mayor Gregory Nthatisi unveiled the 31 vehicles as follows:

Eight 3 ton dropside tucks

Eight refuse compaction trucks

15 load delivery vehicles.

Nthatisi said there are measures in place to ensure that the fleet is not abused and that they are used solely to serve the residents of Mangaung Metro.
