Interesting times are unfolding right before our eyes, whereby we see a global bully taking everyone’s lunch and the global big brother standing up against the bully to protect everyone. The question then is, shouldn’t the big brother mind his own business?
South Africa has never shied away from calling America out for is atrocities, from the days of former President Nelson Mandela, who also spoke out publicly in 2003 to condemn the actions of the United States during the George W Bush administration for invading and attacking Iraq on allegations that there were weapons of mass destruction, while the real reason was getting their hands on its oil.
With every administration, the United State has been become bolder and even more bolder in invading independent sovereign states, because only America can stop America from breaking the law and getting it to respect human rights. The United Nations over the years has also failed to neutralise the U.S.
Donald Trump and his administration is no better and is proving to be worse, from his assumption into the apex office, he has put a target on everyone who does not agree with him. Getting his hands on other country’s natural resources and taking control of the countries. Imposing punitive tariffs and just waging a trade war that affects not only the world, but also American natives and its economy.
America sees South Africa as an enemy because it is in alliance with its enemies and has dragged its ally, Israel, to the International Criminal Court. Clearly South Africa is an irate to the U.S; a country with a big mouth always speaking out whenever USA does any wrong.
South Africa has been punched in the face with tariff increases, ejected from AGOA, barred from attending the G20 in the U.S, accused of genocide on its white population and bias economic empowerment laws, but South Africa refuses to remain silent and mind its own business.
South Africa is mostly the first country to point out the wrongs of America. Given the trend, the U.S before bombing a country, it will accuse it falsely to create a reason to invade the sovereign state. It is clear that America has its target on South Africa, is it then wise to continue provoking the trigger happy administration of Donald Trump that has tasted blood?
In principle, it will be unwise to stand by and not say or do anything when other countries are being victimised, with every victory the U.S gains, the more it wants and tomorrow, you will be next on its hit list. America needs to be named and shamed for its actions, for its disregard towards international law and the UN Charter.
Given its history of colonialism and apartheid, having enjoyed the help and support of other countries who pressured the then regime to end apartheid, South Africa feels that it owes it to the world and to itself to stand up for the oppressed and against imperialism. The stance is that of principle and morality, not of alliance.
As it is said, silence means consent, one needs to speak up to make their position clear on a particular issue; only cowards hide when the occasion demands a stand. Bullies cannot be allowed to run amok freely without any accountability or being called out. The position of South Africa and some political parties may course a missile head its way, but it will go down into history as one country that stood up against the bully and fought for the rights of sovereign states.
America listens to no one, but the persistent rebuke might nominally hold the U.S back and make it realise that, even though they are a military super power, there are some countries who are not afraid to stand up to it and that not everyone is happy with their actions.
What will happen next? We do not know, Trump might embark to punishing South Africa even further, but principle remains unchanged, wrong is wrong, in spite of who is doing it, and right is right even if no one is doing it.
