The latest global developments are both interesting and worrying, particularly the invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the abduction of its President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and son by the United States of America.
This sent shockwaves across the world. The global South echoed their thoughts on this matter as well as the West. The third of January 2026, will go down in history as the date that America boldly challenged the authority of the United Nations with its Security Council and International Law.
The US kicked-off the year with a bang, literally banging Venezuela with military strikes and captured its President for him to appear before a domestic court in America, not even international platform or court- talk about utter disrespect to international authority.
The Trump administration since its inception has been troubling the world, bullying everyone who shares a different view from the US. America has been interfering in sovereign states domestic matters, it has even gone as far as launching bombs in countries, including Nigeria on Christmas day; undermining their independence, sovereignty and right to self-actualisation and solving their own problems.
The United States has gone unpunished for its actions, and every time Trump gets away with murder, the bolder he becomes, and the more he learns that no one will ever challenge America for they are a military super power. What started off as intimidation to the globe, is now resulting in full open rebellion, Trump has gone rogue.
As it is said, talk is cheap, if you are not going to do anything about what you are discussing, you might as well hold your peace. Following his success on Venezuela, Trump now has his sight on Greenland. The more flesh he enjoys, the bolder he becomes and wants more of it, and will not stop with Greenland.
If not stopped, the UN would have made a grave mistake as this will set a fatal precedence that will change the order of the world as it is now. It will be survival of the fittest, small economies will be subjected to larger ones, we will revert to colonialism. The United Nations will be just a shell with no authority over anyone.
Trump listens to no one, he wants what he wants and cares less about the thoughts of the UN, to him, the United Nations is a barking dog that does not bite and it will be exposed as such. Soon other nations will realise or learn this and find it pointless to even call on the UN to intervene on matters of international importance; they will also take matters into their own hands.
The International Criminal Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Israel’s President Benjamin Netanyahu, to date he is not arrested because he is an ally of the US and is protected by the Trump administration. There are many other cases that one can point to whereby America undermines the UN and International Law.
The United States of America has become a law unto itself and stands on a global stage pointing a finger at everyone, threatening everyone who is in business with their enemies and shares different interests; they do it boldly in the face of the UN.
If the UN can’t control or act decisively against America, if it cannot carry out its international mandate to maintain peace and order in the world, if America does not listen to the UN, then why should any other country? Why should even member states listen to a weak authority with no teeth to bite?
The UN’s lack of action on the US will collapse its authority in the long run. America is a threat to its authority and international law. To remain an international authority worthy of respect, the UN needs to take immediate decisive action against the United States of America.
