PARLIAMENT — In a decisive step toward constitutional accountability, the Impeachment Committee on the Section 89 Enquiry officially commenced its high-stakes mandate on Monday by electing Mr. Makashule Gana as its Chairperson.
The inaugural meeting, convened specifically to establish leadership for the inquiry, turned into a clear test of political alignment within the committee. Two members were nominated for the crucial seat: Dr. Lehlohonolo Mahlatsi and Mr. Makashule Gana. Following a formal vote, Gana secured a commanding victory with 19 votes, defeating Mahlatsi, who garnered 12 votes.
With the leadership settled, the committee’s formidable work now formally begins. The Section 89 Enquiry carries immense constitutional weight, tasked with investigating matters that could ultimately lead to the removal of a sitting president.
As Chairperson, Gana assumes a role that will place him directly in the political pressure cooker. He is charged with providing strategic leadership, overseeing highly sensitive proceedings, and guiding member deliberations. Crucially, Gana must ensure the entire process strictly adheres to the Constitution, the Rules of the National Assembly, and the committee’s explicit legal mandate.
The focus now shifts from internal politics to the logistics of accountability. The committee is slated to determine its upcoming programme of work and map out the critical next steps in the inquiry process.
