IEC to hold by elections in the Free State

Political parties in the Free State will once again face-off as they battle to take control of the now vacant five municipal wards in Matjhabeng Municipality and Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality during the by-election on Wednesday, 11 September 2024.

All five wards were previously represented by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province, whose members resigned as they were moved to the Free State Provincial Legislature and NCOP. About 14 political party candidates will be vying for the wards from seven different political parties.

Ward 18 in the Mangaung Municipality: MAN, Free State, will be contested by two (2) political party candidates: 1. Masego Mildred Phetlhu of the ANC; and 2. Gregory Owen Van Noord of the DA.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 49,93%.

Ward 20 in the Mangaung Municipality: MAN, Free State, will be contested by two (2) political party candidates: 1. Mojeng Phillip Tsatsi of the ANC and 2. Corize van Rensburg of the DA.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 57,43%.

Ward 22 in the Mangaung Municipality: MAN, Free State, will be contested by two (2) political party candidates: 1. Mosa Mpakane of the ANC; and 2. Jan –Hendriks Cronje of the DA.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 59,14%.

Ward 25 in the Mangaung Municipality – MAN, Free State, will be contested by two (2) political party candidates: 1. Shadrack Mbulelo Thukani of the ANC; and 2. Paul Maré Kotzé of the DA.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 66,09%.
