Gauteng Shifts Gears: New Digital Licensing System Set to Modernize Public Transport and E-Hailing Regulation

Gauteng is officially taking a major step toward modernizing its transport sector with the launch of the Gauteng Public Transport Regulatory Information System (GPTRIS). Spearheaded by Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, the digital platform debuts today at the Department’s Transport Operating Licensing Administrative Body (TOLAB) in Tshwane.

Designed to overhaul the province’s traditional operating licensing framework, GPTRIS places a special emphasis on bringing much-needed structure, efficiency, and oversight to the rapidly growing e-hailing sector. For years, industry stakeholders have grappled with bureaucratic backlogs and administrative friction; this digital shift aims to turn the page.

According to the Department, the platform is engineered to deliver several critical improvements:

  • Streamlined Operations: It will fast-track the processing and issuing of operating licences.
  • Enhanced Compliance: The system is built to improve regulatory compliance across public transport services.
  • Transparency and Security: By moving to a digital infrastructure, the province expects to significantly enhance operational transparency and reduce opportunities for fraud.
  • Real-Time Tracking: Applicants will benefit from real-time application tracking, removing the guesswork traditionally associated with status updates.

The official launch event kicks off at 10h00 at the Tshwane TOLAB, located at ABSA Towers on 230 Pretorius Street. As Gauteng rolls out this long-awaited digital transition, transport analysts will be watching closely to see how effectively GPTRIS resolves chronic licensing bottlenecks and integrates the e-hailing community into the formal regulatory landscape.
