The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is officially launching a specialized Diabetic Retinopathy Screening and Management Programme today at Tshwane District Hospital. This significant health initiative aims to combat preventable blindness linked to diabetes by bringing vital eye care closer to local communities.
Developed in strategic partnership with ORBIS International, the programme addresses the growing need for accessible, decentralized eye health services. Historically, screening for diabetes-related eye complications has often been restricted to tertiary healthcare facilities.
By shifting these services directly to the primary healthcare level, the initiative ensures that patients managing chronic conditions can receive timely evaluations without navigating complex referral bottlenecks.
Key pillars of the new programme include:
- Early Detection and Referral: Identifying diabetic retinopathy at its earliest, most treatable stages to prevent permanent vision loss.
- Decentralised Care: Bringing screening capabilities out of tertiary hubs and into local primary care settings.
- Healthcare Workforce Up-skilling: Training local clinicians and staff to recognize and manage eye health complications effectively.
- Integrated Chronic Care: Seamlessly weaving primary eye health checks into standard chronic disease management routines.
The initial rollout serves as a vital pilot project, active at Tshwane District Hospital alongside the Laudium, Eersterus, and Bophelong Clinics. By embedding eye screenings into everyday chronic disease visits, health authorities hope to catch subtle vision changes before they escalate into severe complications.
The official launch event takes place today at 10:00 am at the Bank Hall within Tshwane District Hospital. As the pilot takes flight, health advocates anticipate that this model will pave the way for a broader integration of specialized screenings across South Africa’s primary healthcare network, ultimately safeguarding the sight of countless patients living with diabetes.
