CAPE TOWN – The Junior Springboks continued their explosive run in the U20 International Series, delivering a commanding 82–25 victory over Fiji at Wynberg Boys’ High School. Running in 12 tries during a dazzling attacking showcase, South Africa effectively put the game to bed by halftime with a staggering 56–11 lead.
Despite the heavily lopsided scoreline, stand-in captain Vusi Moyo and head coach Kevin Foote are keeping their feet firmly on the ground. With the World Rugby U20 Championship kicking off in Georgia in exactly a month, the team’s leadership remains hyper-focused on eliminating lapses and sharpening game management.
Moyo Leads from the Front
Moyo, executing a masterful performance as playmaker, was central to the Junior Boks’ clinical execution. Pulling the strings for the full 80 minutes, he mirrored his 22-point haul from last week’s clash against Chile by slotting 11 out of 12 conversions.
Beyond his point-scoring prowess, Moyo’s growing leadership was on full display. Now in his second season with the U20 squad, the flyhalf attributed his seamless captaincy to the culture within the camp and the guidance of senior peers like Riley Norton and Esethu Mnebelele.
“We spoke a lot this week about having a strong Test-match mentality and improving our maturity in how we manage the game, and I think that definitely showed today,” Moyo reflected. “The bond in this team is something I really value… We’ve got a special group.”
Chasing 80-Minute Perfection
While the victory was emphatic, it wasn’t without blemish. A late lapse in concentration allowed a resilient Fijian outfit to breach South Africa’s line for a few late tries.
Coach Kevin Foote echoed Moyo’s sentiments, acknowledging that while the squad controlled the vast majority of the exciting contest, maintaining absolute focus for the entire 80 minutes remains a work in progress.
“We’ve got a lot of depth in this group – players are really putting their hands up across the board,” Foote said, praising the character of his roster.
Looking Ahead to Georgia
The road to the World Championship next stops in Stellenbosch on Saturday, where the Junior Boks will face Georgia at Paul Roos Gymnasium’s Markötter Stadium. Foote confirmed that he will continue rotating his squad to strike the delicate balance between high performance and necessary player development.
“We will make changes – it’s been important for us to expose players and build depth,” said Foote. “Georgia will be physical and passionate, and it’s another great step for us as we build towards the Junior World Champs.”
With two massive wins under their belt, the Junior Boks are building serious momentum—but it is their pursuit of flawless discipline that might ultimately define their upcoming global campaign.
