By JOHANNESBURG — The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has issued an urgent call for public assistance following the brutal murders of four women in Ekurhuleni.
The committee is appealing to anyone with information to come forward to help the South African Police Service (SAPS) identify and arrest those responsible.
While growing speculation suggests the killings could be linked to a potential serial killer, the committee emphasized that there is currently no confirmed evidence to establish such a connection. Authorities have cautioned residents against unverified speculation, warning that rumours could compromise ongoing police investigations and cause unnecessary public panic.
Despite unconfirmed links, officials underscored the sheer gravity and brutality of the crimes. Describing the killings as an “intolerable assault on the safety and dignity of women,” the committee stressed that such violence must never be allowed to become normalized.
In response to the tragedy, the committee has urged communities—particularly women—to remain highly vigilant and cautious of their surroundings. Residents are encouraged to avoid potentially dangerous situations and to promptly report any suspicious vehicles, persons, or activities to law enforcement.
The committee has demanded that SAPS leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice, instructing investigators to thoroughly explore every potential lead and determine whether the cases are connected. Furthermore, authorities are calling for strengthened collaboration between the police, community policing forums (CPFs), local safety structures, and everyday residents.
Emphasizing that community members are vital partners in crime prevention, officials noted that even seemingly minor information could prove decisive in apprehending a dangerous perpetrator.
The committee reiterated its firm stance against gender-based violence, declaring that women must be able to live, work, and move freely within their communities without fear.
“These killings must not be allowed to become another statistic,” the committee stated, adding that communities must speak up, police must act decisively, and perpetrators must face the full might of the law.
