Orlando Pirates successfully defended its Nedbank Cup championship and brought the winning streak of Mamelodi Sundowns to a harsh halt during the Nedbank Cup final at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, 1 June 2024.
The match from the onset promised to be a thriller as it kicked off on high pace with Sundowns looking for an early goal. Applying pressure on the Sea Robbers, the Brazilians were awarded a penalty on the 6th minute of the game, however, Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was up for the task and crushed the hopes of Sundowns of an early goal.
The Buccaneers settled into the game and started playing. The two teams ran at each other creating chances, but the first half ended with a goalless draw.
In the second half, Bafana ba Style came back determined putting pressure on Orlando Pirates and was awarded with an opener through Themba Zwane in the 54th minute. The Sea Robbers pushed back running at the Piano and were awarded a penalty and Patrick Maswanganyi convert on the 71st minute. The ground was now level.
As time was slipping away, both teams sought for a winner. On the dying moments of the game, last born Relebohile Mofokeng with brilliant play in the box of Mamelodi Sundowns and after a shibobo placed the ball in the far right post of goal finding the net on the 90+4 minute put Pirates ahead.
The game ended with Pirates leading 2-1.
