BETHAL, MPUMALANGA — In a landmark moment for South Africa’s changing energy landscape, President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially mark the start of commercial operations at the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Energy Facility on Friday, 31 July 2026. The milestone signals a tangible step forward in the country’s push to bolster energy security, modernize critical infrastructure, and foster sustainable economic growth through renewable investments.
The official launch comes three years after the Seriti Green project was first announced at the South African Investment Conference. For a nation focused on turning pledges into high-impact capital assets, the transition from paper commitment to operational infrastructure underscores a crucial win for South Africa’s long-term economic strategy.
What makes the initiative particularly symbolic is its geography. Situated near Bethal, in the heart of Mpumalanga—a region long recognized as the bedrock of the country’s coal-fired power generation—the Ummbila Emoyeni facility serves as a practical blueprint for South Africa’s Just Energy Transition. It illustrates how coal-dependent regions can adapt without abandoning their identity as energy hubs.
Beyond generating green power, the project represents a holistic economic model. It pairs clean electricity generation with crucial investments in transmission infrastructure upgrades, long-term regional operation plans, localized supplier involvement, skills development, and targeted community funding.
The initial phase brings 155MW of wind capacity online. This marks the first step in a broader 900MW renewable energy hub designed to inject much-needed capacity into the national grid while stabilizing the broader energy network.
Crucially, the facility stands out as a case study in effective public-private collaboration.
