A New Era of Healthcare: State-of-the-Art Johan Heyns Gateway Clinic Opens in Vanderbijlpark

Residents of Vanderbijlpark and surrounding communities can now access significantly enhanced primary healthcare services following the official opening of the new Johan Heyns Gateway Clinic. The state-of-the-art facility was handed over on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, by Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, alongside Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Hassan Mako.

The launch marks a vital step in the Gauteng Department of Health’s ongoing mission to modernise healthcare infrastructure, expand access to patient-centred care, and bring essential services directly to local communities.

Modern Infrastructure and Cutting-Edge Patient Flow

Designed to optimize service delivery and reduce congestion, the new clinic features 35 purpose-built spaces and systems. These include:

  • 13 consulting rooms dedicated to comprehensive medical evaluations.
  • A dedicated emergency room paired with a triage and vitals area.
  • Specialized spaces including a physiotherapy room and a dispensary.

To combat long queues and streamline operations, the facility has integrated an innovative digital patient flow system. This technology allows clinicians to electronically generate and dispatch prescriptions straight to the pharmacy, minimizing wait times and maximizing administrative efficiency.

Furthermore, the clinic houses an on-site Gauteng Emergency Medical Services base, dramatically strengthening local emergency medical response capabilities for Vanderbijlpark and neighbouring areas.

Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Services

Operating Monday through Friday from 07h00 to 16h00, the gateway clinic delivers a wide-ranging package of health interventions. Services provided at the facility include:

  • Acute and minor ailments management, alongside chronic disease care.
  • Comprehensive HIV, sexually transmitted infection (STI), and tuberculosis (TB) management.
  • Antenatal care, family planning, and dedicated mother and child health services.
  • Specialized support including social work, mental health services, rehabilitation, men’s health, and dietetics.
  • Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services, routine health promotion, community outreach programs, and Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing and Distribution (CCMDD) services.

Bridging the Gap Toward a District Hospital

The opening of the gateway clinic directly supports regional healthcare transitions. The facility was established following the closure and ongoing redevelopment of the former Johan Heyns Community Health Centre, which is currently being transformed into a fully-fledged District Hospital.

Once complete, that hospital will further expand regional medical capabilities, offering a broader scope of specialized interventions close to home.

During the handover, MEC Mazibuko emphasized that the project embodies the government’s vision of an integrated, responsive, and dignified healthcare system.

“We will continue investing in healthcare infrastructure that responds to the growing needs of our communities and improves access to quality care,” said MEC Mazibuko. She also urged local residents to protect the facility from vandalism and crime, ensuring that the community asset remains safeguarded for current and future generations.
