Proximity not a guarantee: A week of fall-outs

It is a well-known philosophy of politics that in that space, there are no permanent friends, and there are no permanent enemies either. Politics is a game of convenience, off allies for or during a particular course, after that, ‘it is God for us all and every man for himself.’

The post-modern world is a very fast-paced world, things that used to take a significant period to play-out now happen within months, and even days. The month of June 2025 will be dubbed as a month of fall-outs throughout history.

This past week we witnessed that proximity to power does not guarantee any position or business deal, as things can go south very fast and one can be dropped like a hot potato in a blink of an eye. Careers can come to a screeching end, ambitions put on ice and one can be out in the distant cold of power faster than you can spell the word ‘power’.

MKP and Floyd Shivambu

It was a sad to see Floyd Shivambu leave the EFF to join the MKP, but the question that flooded the minds of many was, ‘is he making the right choice?’, though Shivambu confirmed on his X account that he has made the best decision ever and has no regrets, current events are proving that he made an uncalculated move to join the MKP camp led by a man they used attack in parliament and were instrumental in his removal as President of the country.

There were suspicions and speculations that the Leader of MKP Jacob Zuma is attempting to destroy the EFF form within, however that was refuted. Floyd Shivambu was SG of the party and had the audience of President Zuma, he had influence and Zuma at some point defended him against attacks from his own daughter, he had serious influence within the party.

Since his arrival at the party, he did not enjoy the respect and influence he had with EFF, he faced a lot of pushback from fellow party members.

Shivambu made another uncalculated move while in Malawi, visiting the fugitive and self-proclaimed Shepherd Bushiri at his church, which made headlines, he further posted on his social media page acknowledging the fugitive, after serious criticism by South Africans and the Minister for Justice, he still went on TV for an interview where he remained unrepented about his actions, he said President Zuma knows everything he does, the visit was on his personal capacity and that Bushiri is not wanted by him, but by law enforcement in South Africa.

I personally believe that the interview was the final nail to his political career with MKP, Zuma and the MKP were now forced to distance themselves from such and take action, of which they did; he was demoted to Member of Parliament. This might be a move to oust him indirectly, frustrate him until he leaves by himself.

Though he claims he did not join the MKP for positions and will never leave the party even if he has no position, Shivambu is ambitious and will not stay long in an organisation where he is stagnant, where he can’t rise or play a significant, influential role, he will get frustrated and make an exit for greener postures.

Musk and Trump

This one must be one of the most interesting fall-outs in the history of mankind, a very public fallout between Elon Musk who supported Donald Trump in becoming president, mainly over a bill that Trump introduced, of which Musk claims he did not see the bill and it was presented in the dead of the night and very fast, he was not pleased with that.

The fallout kept on escalating by the minute with Trump threatening to end all contracts with government belonging to Musk, in turn, Musk has threaten to decommission SpaceX Dragon spacecraft immediately.

It has been a back and forth of the once close allies now turned foes and it is getting uglier by the minute.

What happens next, remains to be seen but in politics things can change very fast, there is no guarantee of anything, proximity to power is just virtual, it is here today and gone the next.
