Team Gauteng Ready to Conquer Bloemfontein: Senior Athletes Set Sights on Glory at 2026 National Golden Games

JOHANNESBURG — The spirit of competition is burning bright in the heart of Gauteng as a spirited contingent of approximately 200 senior citizens departs for the Free State to fly the provincial flag high at the 2026 National Golden Games.

Running from 30 to 31 October 2026 in Bloemfontein, the prestigious tournament brings together veteran athletes aged 60 and above from across the country to showcase their enduring athleticism, stamina, and competitive edge.

Drawn from diverse community-based facilities and active ageing clubs throughout the province, Team Gauteng enters this year’s championship under the powerful banner: “Golden Years: See Our Value; Golden Opportunities: Promote Our Rights.” Far from a mere recreational outing, the squad steps onto the national stage with a fierce desire to battle for top honours and bring home silverware.

A Rallying Cry for Gold

At the official send-off ceremony, the atmosphere crackled with energy and optimism. Gauteng Older Persons Chairperson Cynthia Nhlapho rallied her teammates, expressing immense pride as the province prepared for the journey south.

“We are grateful that this day has finally arrived. We are united as Gauteng and share one goal. Let us go to Bloemfontein and have fun,” Nhlapho declared, balancing the joy of camaraderie with the competitive hunger expected of elite representatives.

The stakes were raised further by Zain Bulbulia, representing the Gauteng Office of the Premier, who threw down the gauntlet to the team. Bulbulia challenged the athletes to enjoy the momentous experience while setting their sights on breaking KwaZulu-Natal’s historical dominance to secure ultimate victory for Gauteng.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko: “You Are Going There to Compete”

Gauteng MEC for Social Development Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko radiated enthusiasm as she gave her final backing to the province’s delegation, emphasizing that Team Gauteng is traveling to the Free State strictly for business.

“I am the happiest MEC in the province today because you all look ready to conquer Bloemfontein,” MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko told the cheering athletes. “As Gauteng, we are sending our best to represent us. You are not going there for sightseeing, but to compete. I am your number one supporter, and nothing makes me happier than seeing you healthy, active and smiling.”

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko underscored that the provincial government remains deeply committed to empowering older persons through sports. The National Golden Games serve as the crown jewel of the broader Active Ageing Programme, a vital regional intervention designed to combat lifestyle diseases, enhance longevity, and elevate the standard of living for older citizens.

More Than Just a Game: Health, Mobility, and Dignity

Sports science consistently backs the profound impact of physical activity later in life. Regular athletic engagement is a proven catalyst for slashing the risks associated with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and depression.

Beyond the physical health benefits, competitive programmes like the Golden Games provide older adults with the tools to preserve vital mobility, secure lasting independence, and foster deep community bonds.

As the events get underway in Bloemfontein, Team Gauteng stands ready to prove that chronological age is no barrier to excellence. For these 200 ambassadors, the track and field represent arenas of dignity, resilience, and unyielding sporting passion—proving once and for all that their golden years are indeed their finest hour.
