By JOHANNESBURG — A devastating weekend massacre has left the province in deep shock after an armed gang stormed a local tavern in Wedela, Carletonville, executing a calculated attack that claimed 17 lives and left 15 others critically injured.
The horrific assault unfolded on Saturday night at approximately 21:30 at Dora’s Tavern, located along Hector Peterson Street in Extension 3. According to preliminary reports from the Gauteng Provincial Government, a heavily armed squad of roughly eight men brandishing AK-47 assault rifles and pistols targeted patrons both inside and outside the establishment.
The coordinated violence resulted in immediate carnage. Five victims—four men and one woman—were gunned down outside the premises, while another 12 individuals—nine men and three women—perished inside.
Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) later confirmed the grim death toll of 17 at the scene. An additional 15 patrons sustained severe gunshot wounds and were rushed by emergency responders to hospitals across Carletonville and Leratong for urgent medical intervention.
Eyewitness and preliminary accounts indicate that the perpetrators methodically searched patrons, stripping them of an undisclosed number of cellphones before torching two vehicles and fleeing the scene in two unidentified getaway cars.
Leaders Vow Swift Justice
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed profound horror and grief over the tragedy, underscoring the senseless nature of the assault.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this senseless loss of life. There can be no justification for such an attack on innocent people. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and everyone affected by this horrific incident,” stated Premier Lesufi.
In response to the provincial crisis, law enforcement agencies have launched a massive manhunt and top-tier investigation. A specialized crime scene investigation team, bolstered by the National CSI Task Team, has been deployed to process the evidence.
Provincial authorities have welcomed the rapid mobilization of South African Police Service (SAPS) personnel, alongside Acting West Rand District Commissioner Brigadier Xaba and provincial EMS units.
While the exact motive and identities of the gunmen remain under active investigation, authorities are pleading with the public for assistance. Officials have strongly urged anyone with viable information to come forward and cooperate with police investigators.
Furthermore, the provincial government issued a stern warning against the circulation of unverified rumours and graphic material on social media. Officials emphasized that spreading speculative or distressing content only inflicts deeper trauma on grieving families and risks compromising the integrity of the ongoing police investigation.
A Renewed Fight for Public Safety
As communities across the West Rand mourn the staggering loss of life, the provincial administration has pledged coordinated intervention. The Gauteng Provincial Government is working closely with SAPS, the West Rand District Municipality, and the City of Merafong City to deliver psychosocial support services to the devastated community.
This latest atrocity places renewed pressure on security authorities to combat the proliferation of high-calibre illegal firearms and surging violent crime across South Africa’s townships.
“The people of Gauteng must be able to live, work and socialise without fear of becoming victims of violent crime,” the provincial government affirmed in a statement, vowing to maintain relentless pressure alongside law enforcement and local communities to restore public safety.
