South Africa’s top youth tennis players completely dominated the CAT/ITF Southern Africa U14 and U16 Championships, securing the overall trophy at the nine-day regional showpiece in Gaborone, Botswana which concluded on Saturday 17 January.
Competing against 10 other countries, the SA team went unbeaten throughout the tournament, winning all their ties in the group stages and the playoffs in all four divisions.
In the final of the U16 boys competition, the national team beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in the singles matches, and the doubles contest did not need to be played.
In the U16 girls and U14 boys categories, the SA sides were level at 1-1 against Zimbabwe in the finals, but they triumphed in the doubles matches to earn 2-1 victories.
And in the U14 girls division, South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the singles matches to win the final against Botswana.
Team SA finished top of the overall rankings with 1 320 points, lifting the junior team trophy and bringing home the regional title.
Zimbabwe finished second with 650 points and Botswana ended third with 520 points.
