By Golden Arrows produced a tactical master-class in resilience on Sunday afternoon, stunning Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Despite the Brazilians controlling the lion’s share of possession and dictating play for long stretches, Abafana Bes’thende made their rare moments count, handing the hosts a costly defeat in front of their home fans.
Sundowns set the tempo early and looked destined to take the lead within the opening 11 minutes. Cassius Mailula slipped a precise pass through to Lebo Mothiba, putting the forward one-on-one with Edward Maova. The Arrows goalkeeper rushed off his line to produce a brave, decisive save, though it came at a heavy cost.
Maova suffered an injury during the collision and had to be stretchered off in the 18th minute, paving the way for Thakasani Mbanjwa to take his place between the posts.
Mothiba continued to prove a menace for the Arrows defence, soon heading wide from a left-wing delivery. Yet, for all of Sundowns’ early dominance, their final execution continuously lacked lethal edge.
That inefficiency came back to haunt them in the 38th minute. Completely against the run of play, Arrows tore open the Sundowns backline with surgical precision. Right-back Khulekani Shezi picked up the ball and threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Sede Junior Dion. The forward made no mistake, finishing crisply with a low strike through the legs of Ricardo Goss to send the visitors into the break with a shock lead.
Sundowns attempted to spark a response before halftime, but Bennet Mokoena’s curling long-range effort was brilliantly pushed away by the substitute goalkeeper Mbanjwa.
Desperate to alter the game’s momentum, Sundowns made a swift quadruple substitution early in the second half, introducing Brayan Leon, Tashreeq Matthews, Sphelele Mkhulise, and Nuno Santos. The tactical reshuffle reignited the home side’s attack, but Mbanjwa proved impassable. In the 70th minute, Kegan Johannes connected with a whipped corner kick, only to see his glancing header denied by another outstanding reflex save from the replacement shot-stopper.
Johannes threatened again in the closing stages, but sent his late header over the crossbar as Arrows clung tightly to their advantage through four nerve-wracking minutes of stoppage time.
With a crucial away goal tucked safely in their pocket, Golden Arrows head into the return fixture at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday, 30 August with a slender but crucial advantage. Both sides will first pivot back to Betway Premiership duty this Wednesday, 26 August—Sundowns hosting AmaZulu FC while Arrows welcome Stellenbosch FC—before settling this tense semi-final tie.
