Samba and Allan Shine on Debut as City Cruise Past Norwich in Carabao Cup Opener

The defence of the Carabao Cup began in emphatic fashion at the Etihad Stadium, where a heavily rotated Manchester City side swept Norwich City aside in a commanding 5-0 victory.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, manager Enzo Maresca opted to make ten changes from the side that secured a gritty 1-0 derby win over Manchester United just days prior. Among the fresh faces were a trio of debutants: goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, Brazilian winger Allan, and 17-year-old Academy graduate Floyd Samba, who was entrusted to lead the line in place of the rested Erling Haaland.

What followed was a master-class in youthful exuberance and tactical control, headlined by a dream senior bow for teenage sensation Samba, who bagged a brilliant brace.

Patience Rewarded Before the Floodgates Open

Norwich arrived with a clear game plan, packing bodies behind the ball and looking to frustrate the hosts on the counter. City were forced to show patience and composure against a stubborn Canaries backline.

Samba wasted no time making his presence felt, however. Just nine minutes in, the young striker teed up Rico Lewis for an early effort that sailed just over the crossbar. The breakthrough finally arrived on 29 minutes. Nico O’Reilly floated a deep cross from the left flank, which was recycled out to Allan on the opposite wing.

The Brazilian winger instantly whipped an inviting delivery into the heart of the penalty area, where Samba showed remarkable poise and awareness to steer a deft header past former City goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw.

City’s grip on the tie tightened further just three minutes later. Ayyoub Bouaddi orchestrated the move from the middle of the pitch, threading a neat pass into the path of the onrushing Rayan Cherki.

The French playmaker accepted the invitation, powering forward before drilling a low, decisive shot past Grimshaw to double the advantage. Samba nearly added a third before the interval, bursting clear only to be denied by a vital last-ditch block from Norwich defender Kellen Fisher.

Second-Half Glare and Debutant Delight

If the first half established control, the second half turned into a showcase for City’s electrifying newcomers.

Just three minutes after the restart, Allan etched his name onto the score-sheet. Cutting inward from the left side of the box, the winger unleashed a crisp, low effort that beat Grimshaw to cap off a memorable Etihad bow.

Not to be outdone, Samba struck again in the 54th minute. Latching onto a pass from Rayan Aït-Nouri on the right side of the area, the teenager coolly curled a sublime effort past the helpless Norwich keeper, sealing a remarkable two-goal performance on his full debut.

Norwich thought they had found a lifeline 15 minutes from time when substitute Mohamed Toure bundled the ball into the net, but the linesman’s flag cut short any celebrations, preserving a clean sheet for debutant custodian Rulli.

The icing on the cake arrived one minute into injury time. Substitute Ryan McAidoo applied a sweet finish to a fluid, sweeping team move, rounding off a comprehensive evening’s work.

Looking Ahead

The comprehensive victory extends City’s winning streak across all competitions to six games. For Maresca, the night offered invaluable squad depth, tactical flexibility, and the exhilarating emergence of fresh academy talent.

City’s reward for a dominant night in Manchester is a fourth-round home tie against Brighton, scheduled for late next month. On the evidence of this performance, the holders are more than ready to defend their crown.
