JOHANNESBURG — The South African Football Association (SAFA) has forcefully rejected media reports claiming that Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has been granted a one-year contract extension, labelling the allegations as “false, unfounded and misleading”.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the governing body sought to set the record straight following a wave of speculation across major media outlets suggesting the Belgian tactician had secured his future with the national team.
Setting the Record Straight
According to SAFA, no new deal has been offered, approved, or signed for the head coaching role. The association confirmed that Broos remains under his existing contract, which runs through the end of July 2026.
“To set the record straight, SAFA has not issued any contract to any coach in respect of the Bafana Bafana head coach position,” the statement read. “Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement.”
SAFA explained that governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team are still ongoing. Any official decision on the coaching staff must first be finalized and approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC)—a step that has not yet taken place.

Call for Responsible Reporting
The association expressed strong disappointment with media houses that cited unnamed sources to fuel the contract extension rumours. SAFA cautioned that such unsourced claims distort the truth, confuse football supporters, and disrupt internal decision-making structures.
- Misleading Claims: Reports alleging a one-year extension are completely baseless.
- Governance First: No contract can be issued without formal approval from the NEC.
- Media Protocol: SAFA urged journalists to seek official right-of-response comments before publishing claims about its internal affairs.
“A simple request for comment would enable SAFA to verify facts and assist in preventing the publication and circulation of unfounded or unsupported reports,” the association noted, calling on media outlets to uphold higher standards of journalistic integrity.
What Lies Ahead for Bafana Bafana?
While football fans remain eager to learn who will guide Bafana Bafana into their next chapter, SAFA assured stakeholders that an official announcement will be made through legitimate channels as soon as internal reviews conclude. Until then, supporters are urged to rely strictly on official SAFA communications for reliable updates regarding the national team.
