By Orlando Pirates demonstrated their title credentials with a commanding 4–0 victory over Kruger United at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night, while Durban City and Stellenbosch FC ground out a goalless stalemate in Chatsworth.
The reigning Betway Premiership champions made light work of their trip to Mpumalanga, securing their third consecutive league victory while sending the hosts to a third straight defeat.
The Bucs set the tone almost immediately, winning a penalty in the second minute after Kamogelo Sebelebele was upended in the box by Katlego Mohamme. Ghampani Lungu stepped up and coolly sent the keeper the wrong way to hand the visitors an early advantage.
Despite the early setback, Kruger United responded valiantly, controlling large spells of possession in the first half and forcing Pirates to rely on quick transition play. Kruger came agonisingly close to equalising when Aphiwe Mphothe saw a header cleared off the line, while Sipho Chaine was called into action to deny Zwane, whose strike rattled the upright just before the interval.
Having survived the first-half pressure, Jose Riveiro’s side took control after the break, inspired by midfielder Oswin Appollis, who produced a master-class off the bench after coming on in the 13th minute.
Pirates doubled their lead in the 54th minute when Appollis threaded an exquisite through ball to Boitumelo Radiopane, who held off his defender before finishing calmly to score for the second game running.
Appollis notched his second assist in the 78th minute, squaring the ball for Yanela Mbuthuma to tap home from close range after another sharp counter-attack. Mbuthuma put the finishing touches on a flawless second-half performance deep into stoppage time, coolly lobbing the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation to complete his brace and mark the first time Pirates have hit four goals in a match this season.
Frustration in Chatsworth
While goals flowed freely in Mbombela, high-value chances were squandered at the Chatsworth Stadium as Durban City and Stellenbosch FC shared the points in a 0–0 draw.
The Citizens started brightly, but it was Stellenbosch who had the first gilt-edged chance in the 13th minute when Durban goalkeeper Fredrick Asare spilled a free kick. The ball dropped invitingly for Lehlogonolo Matlou, but the midfielder blazed his volley over the crossbar from the centre of the penalty area.
Durban dominated the remainder of the first period, with Gaston Sirino and Tylo Sanger pulling the strings. The hosts almost broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when Samkelo Mashego chipped onrushing keeper Sage Stephens, only for Spiwe Msimango to clear off the line with a back-tracking intervention.
The second half turned into a tactical battle, with both sides tightening their structures in midfield. City substitute Tashreeq Morris found space inside the box in the 76th minute, but Msimango produced another pivotal block to deny the striker.
Stellenbosch threatened against the run of play two minutes later when Sinoxolo Kwayiba curled a strike toward the top corner, prompting an impressive diving save from Asare.
The game’s clearest opening arrived eight minutes from time when City’s Luphumlo Sifumba whipped a precise cross to Jean Lwamba, but the forward misdirected his header wide from just a few yards out.
The point moves Durban City up to sixth place in the table with six points from five matches, while Stellenbosch sit 10th on five points. Stellies return home to face Sekhukhune United on Friday, 11 September, while Durban face a daunting trip to Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, 16 September.
