Ramaphosa Urges Inclusive Elections and Full Peace Accord Implementation During South Sudan Talks

PRETORIA — President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit in Pretoria on a working visit aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties and bolstering the fragile peace process in East Africa.

During high-level discussions in the South African capital, President Ramaphosa placed heavy emphasis on the critical necessity of strictly adhering to the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

Pretoria views full compliance with this accord as the cornerstone for advancing ongoing peace efforts and locking in long-term stability for South Sudanese citizens.

A central focus of the Pretoria summit was the upcoming electoral roadmap. Ramaphosa stressed that an inclusive electoral process—built firmly on mutual trust and cooperation across all South Sudanese stakeholders—is vital. Such collaboration is deemed essential to resolve remaining political hurdles and establish a secure, enabling environment ahead of the crucial December elections.

Furthermore, both leaders evaluated the broader regional architecture required to sustain political progress. The talks reaffirmed the indispensable role of continued regional engagement, which includes targeted electoral capacity support delivered by the C5 nations to bolster South Sudan’s democratic transition.
