
A new journey in comfort and safety has begun for two families in Kwakwatsi Extension 5 in Koppies in the Free State following the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and Human Settlement Mr Saki Mokoena handing over the two houses.
Semonki Elizabeth Motaung (86) and Christina Erens (74) who lives with disability were left destitute in March and April this year when their shacks were flooded due to heavy rains at the time. Their desperate situation and cries fell on the ears of the MEC, who promised them new houses and moved them to a new location.
MEC Saki Mokoena on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, handed over the homes to the elderly duo, who were ecstatic to receive the keys to their homes. The two beneficiaries thanked Mokoena and the department for the new homes they have received.
Later, the MEC handed over cleaning tools to the Metsimaholo Local Municipality in Sasolburg as part of the Community Works Programme. The handover took place outside the Metsimaholo local municipality offices, where the Mayor Cllr Jack Malindi, District Mayor Cllr Dennis Khasudi were in attendance.
MEC Mokoena again encouraged the CWP workers to take responsibility of the resources that have been provided in support of both the municipality and the CWP programme.
The day before, on Monday, 1 September 2025, MEC Saki Mokoena accompanied by HOD Adv. Phahlo officially handed over more than 1900 serviced sites to the communities in Majwemasweu Extension 5 in Brandfort today. The project which has been completed three months ahead of schedule entails the installation of sewer and water networks, storm water drainage and 24km road network.
The total cost of the project is estimated at more than R 180-million. The project has been completed three-months ahead of schedule.
MEC Mokoena also handed over environmental tools to the Masilonyana local municipality for the Community Works Programme.
