The Department of Economic Development and Tourism in the Free State has confirmed to the media that MEC for Finance and Economic Development and Tourism Mr Ketso Makume was involved in car accident on Sunday, 19 April 2026.
The news brought much panic to the provincial government and communities in the province; however, the department has confirmed that Makume, who was with his protectors at the time of the accident, has escaped with his life without any serious injuries.
The department explained that the incident occurred on the N5 between Paul Roux and Senekal. The accident took place when a wild animal unexpectedly crossed the road, and the driver was unable to avoid a collision.
“We are relieved to report that the MEC and both his protectors escaped without sustaining any serious injuries. While we acknowledge that this news may cause concern, we respectfully request that the MEC, his protectors, and their families be afforded the necessary space and privacy to recover, and to enable them to resume their duties at the earliest opportunity,” said Mojalefa Mphapang the Spokesperson of the Free State Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
