The quest to unify and rebuild the African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State continues and will be led by the former President Thabo Mbeki as he will be making his appearance at the PEC Renewal Convocation today in Welkom.
It is well known and documented that the ANC in the Free State was at some point riddled with factions, division and strife, but the provincial leadership braved the political storm and marched against the strong current to renew, unify and rebuild the liberation party in 2022.
President Thabo Mbeki made his first appearance in February 2022 during the reign of the IPC, to engage the ANC on issues of unity, renewal and rebuilding the structures of the movement. The party was positive and developed a program of action with clear tasks resulting from the declaration which was adopted.
Mbeki’s return to the Free State is a continuation of the previous program and he will be addressing the PEC at the Kingdom Ministries, in Welkom, during his two days stay in the Province from 6 to 7 September 2024.
Since the first meeting, the Congress in the province has had a low rate of conflicts within the party and has been at strides in self-correcting. The infighting has caused serious damage to the party’s image and dented confidence from the people who expressed their dissatisfaction at the polls.
The infighting and factions in the ANC affected numerous issues including service delivery in communities. However, the party has acknowledged its short comings and is working on correcting its wrongs.
The Renewal Convocation is expected to kick-off at 9:30am.
