PRETORIA — In a direct bid to tackle structural unemployment and realign education with industry demand, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Deputy Minister for Higher Education and Training Dr. Nomusa Dube-Ncube will officially launch the Gauteng Human Resource Development Council (GHRDC) today at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
As the economic engine of South Africa, Gauteng continues to struggle against pressing socioeconomic headwinds, including rising youth unemployment, deep-rooted inequality, and persistent skill shortages. The establishment of the GHRDC marks a high-level intervention designed to build a future-ready workforce capable of driving long-term economic expansion and job creation.
Chaired by Premier Lesufi, the GHRDC will function as the province’s premier multi-sectoral leadership body. Its primary mandate is to oversee the execution of the Gauteng Master Skills Plan and ensure that human capital investments align directly with key regional economic sectors. By bringing together leaders from government, business, organized labour, academia, and civil society, the initiative aims to dismantle the systemic disconnect between academic output and labour market needs.
The formal launch takes place at 10:00 at the Kgorong Building on UNISA’s Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria. Policy experts and market analysts will be closely monitoring the council’s rollout, looking for tangible policy mechanisms that can turn human capital strategy into measurable economic dividends.
