Johannesburg — The Gauteng Department of Health has released an official statement addressing media reports surrounding the medical management of a Grade 10 learner injured during a recent mass shooting in Wedela, located on the West Rand.
According to the department, the young victim was initially rushed to Leratong Regional Hospital. Medical personnel at the facility assessed and stabilized the patient before making the clinical decision to transfer him to Carletonville District Hospital for continued, appropriate management.
Reaffirming the Right to Emergency Care
In the wake of public discussions regarding the case, health authorities have strongly reiterated that South African public healthcare facilities operate under strict ethical and regulatory frameworks. No individual seeking emergency medical treatment can be turned away or denied care based on factors such as:
- Nationality or immigration status
- Race or gender
- Ability to pay
The department emphasized that healthcare professionals are bound by duty to provide clinically appropriate care and prioritize patient stabilization solely based on medical necessity.
Addressing Referral and Billing Concerns
Health officials clarified that the learner’s immigration status played no role in the clinical care he received. Furthermore, his transfer to Carletonville District Hospital was strictly determined by his clinical management needs and the appropriate level of care required, rather than any refusal of treatment.
Regarding questions surrounding hospital fees, the department explained that billing practices follow applicable regulations and the Uniform Patient Fee Schedule for individuals classified as full-paying patients. However, authorities stressed that administrative and financial procedures never supersede patient well-being: financial processing does not prevent individuals from receiving necessary medical attention, and the learner will continue to receive ongoing care regardless of any outstanding balances.
The Gauteng Department of Health concluded by reaffirming its dedication to treating every patient with dignity, fairness, and compassion, maintaining that healthcare access remains a fundamental right for all individuals in need.
