By The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is scaling up its recruitment efforts to fill funded vacant positions across provincial health institutions, aiming to bolster service delivery and support overburdened healthcare workers.
Recent data released by the department highlights active movement across multiple phases of the hiring pipeline. As of 9 September 2026, the department has completed 1,259 interviews, advanced 1,008 posts to the shortlisting phase, and published advertisements for 1,393 positions.
These openings span a wide array of critical medical disciplines, encompassing nursing, therapeutic services, clinical support, and other essential healthcare functions.
Major facilities, particularly academic and tertiary hospitals that handle specialized care and patient referrals from both Gauteng and neighbouring provinces, are a primary focus of this recruitment drive. Progress reports indicate that 313 posts across the province’s four academic hospitals have reached the interview stage, alongside 272 posts across its three tertiary hospitals.
Combined, these 585 advanced positions at the major seven hospitals represent a substantial step toward augmenting specialized clinical capacity.
Beyond clinical staff, the department is also addressing leadership gaps by advancing the recruitment of Senior Management positions, which includes the permanent appointment of facility CEOs. A total of 36 management positions have been advertised, with the department having finalized summaries and currently awaiting panel member confirmations to proceed with selections.
Facility CEOs retain institutional-level delegated authority to advertise and fill funded vacancies within their allocated budgets.
Acknowledging that unfilled vacancies heighten workplace stress and intensify workloads for existing personnel, GDoH reiterated that expediting the recruitment process remains a top priority. Department spokesperson Steve Mabona appealed for patience from both staff and the public as the administration works to finalize these appointments.
