BLOEMFONTEIN — The Free State Provincial Government has officially requested a Category 1 Provincial Official Funeral from President Cyril Ramaphosa following the death of former Executive Council member and veteran lawmaker Thembeni Nxangisa, who passed away after an illness.

A Dedicated Career in Public Governance

Nxangisa entered the Free State Executive Council in May 2019 when he was appointed MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). During his tenure until October 2021, he focused heavily on local government stability, driving initiatives to bolster service delivery and building partnerships with traditional leadership institutions.

He subsequently assumed leadership of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. In this role, Nxangisa spearheaded efforts aimed at revitalizing the province’s agricultural economy and prioritizing rural upliftment. Following his tenure in the executive, he continued to serve as the Chief Whip of the majority party within the Free State Legislature, maintaining an active role in provincial legislative affairs.
