Four cases of FMD confirmed in Free State

The farming community in the Free State province continues the battle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) as four new cases have been discovered by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the province.

The department has on Monday, 25 August 2025, confirmed four cases of FMD in the province. According to the Department, three cases are in Kroonstad, two are on commercial farms and one is in a community grazing area and the fourth case was confirmed on a commercial farm near Cornelia in Mafube municipality.

The department has since implemented movement restriction in the affected areas, within a 10 kilometres radius. The affected farms have been placed under quarantine and all farms within the radius have been notified about the outbreak and placed under precautionary quarantine until surveillance is completed to determine any spread of the disease.

The Department says it has prioritised vaccination in the affected farms; it says it implemented vaccination immediately to avert further spread of the disease and reduce the viral load. Surveillance activity remains on-going in Moqhaka, Metsimaholo and Mafube municipalities to determine the possible extent of the spread of the disease.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says it remains committed to transparent communication and will continue to keep all stakeholders informed as further developments unfold.
