Explosion leaves residents in the dark

In less than 24 hours after power was restored in Bloemfontein, following a weekend without electricity in parts of the city, CENTLEC says its Bayswater Distribution Centre exploded on Monday evening leaving a number of areas in the dark.

According to the Acting Spokesperson for CENTLEC Tsheliso Leba, on Monday, 23 February 2026, at around 21:15, CENTLEC experienced a power outage as a result of an explosion on one of the 132/33 KVA transformer at Bayswater Distribution Centre which left some parts of the city without electricity.

He said the Mangaung Fire Brigades were called and are currently on site to extinguish the fire.

“The preliminary investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the explosion and the extent of the damage on the network. Our teams are already on site working to restore power to all affected areas. Estimated restoration time is plus/minus 24 hours. Further details will be given once new information becomes available,” said Leba.
