Consumers keep the economy going and their rights are essential for repeat business and value for money. The Free State Department of Economic Development and Tourism has re-affirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights by strengthening the Consumer Court in the province.
The Department has appointed six members to the Free State Consumer Affairs Court. The said half-dozen court officials were recently sworn in by Chief Magistrate, Mr Cornelius Mokgobo at DESTEA Head office in Bloemfontein.
The department says it has taken a significant step forward to ensure consumer rights are upheld, grievances are redressed, and justice prevails.
According to DESTEA, the Free State Consumer Court is a cornerstone of justice for consumers in the province. It reinforces the dedication to adjudicate unfair business practices and disputes that may arise in the marketplace between consumers and suppliers.
With its primary mission being to safeguard the interests of consumers, the court plays a pivotal role in maintaining a justice and equitable economic landscape.
The newly appointed members will serve a term of three years as outlined in the Consumer Protection Act No. 68 of 2008 and Unfair Business Practice Act No 04 of 1996 as amended.
According to the Head of the Department, Dr Mbulelo Nokwequ; the swearing in of these newly appointed members signifies a reinvigorated commitment to the values that underpin the court’s existence.
“Each member has a unique background and expertise to reinforce our determination in providing a platform where every consumer’s voice is heard and a place for a collective ability to navigate complex Consumer-related matters, in order to make informed and unbiased decisions.
This court is a vital pillar of our commitment to protect and empower consumers across the province,” said Dr Nokwequ.
The Consumer Affairs Court has the powers of declaring business practices to be unfair, conduct to be prohibited, and order refunds for actual financial loss for unfair business practices. If the supplier does not comply, the Free State Consumer Affairs Court has the power to refer the case to the Magistrate court for consideration and endorsement.
