CENTLEC to increase tariffs in July

CENTLEC to increase tariffs in July

CENTLEC has expressed concern over the misleading messages making the rounds on social media platforms that it will increase electricity tariffs from 1 April 2024, following the announcement by Eskom to increase electricity prices on the day.

The Spokesperson for CENTLEC Mr Lele Mamatu says the utility is concerned over the messages encouraging people to buy electricity before the stated date before the 12% increase comes to effect. Mamatu however cleared the confusion that, CENTLEC will only effect tariff increase in July for the financial year 2024/25 in the areas where they operate after the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has considered their increase application for that period.

“The 12,72% increment announced by ESKOM over the Easter Weekend have no bearing on CENTLECs’ tariff increment application which is yet to be approved. However, all our clients are advised that CENTLEC will be implementing the winter tariffs with effect from the 1st of June 2024 till the 31st of August 2024. Summer tariffs will only kick in from the 1st of September 2024,” said Lele Mamatu.

Eskom announced electricity prices increase as follows: Local authority (municipalities) charges will effect from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025 with an increase of 12.72%. Direct Eskom customer’s charges will effect from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025 at 12.74%.
