Having already qualified for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in 2025, the South African senior men’s team made sure that they go for maximum points, they were taking no prisoners.
Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos made a few changes to his squad, which paid off very well. The team made its intentions very clear last night 19 November 2024, at the Cape Town Stadium by starting off strong with Iqraam Rayners scoring an early goal on the 7th minute.
Bafana Bafana did not give South Sudan leeway to at least register a goal despite the fact that they were already through to the continental tournament. To extend the social distancing, Patrick Maswanganyi skilfully extended Bafana Bafana’s lead to 2-0 on the 22nd minute.
The teams went to break with South Africa leading South Sudan 2-0.
In second half, Bafana Bafana kept on applying pressure on South Sudan, who was chasing most of the game, the visitors made a mistake which the referee gave a penalty to South Africa; Teboho Mokoena, confidently so, converted the penalty putting the game beyond the East African team.
Now discouraged, South Sudan were merely present on the pitch, as Bafana Bafana dominated the match, creating opportunities but were unfortunate to capitalise on them, most the shorts were off target. Until the last whistle, Bafana Bafana kept on searching for another goal to increase their lead.
Bafana Bafana beat South Sudan 3-0, and they are now at the top of group K with 14 points with no loss. Their focus will now be on the AFCON tournament next year; they will enter the AFCON confident as they finished strong in the qualifier with maximum points.
Coach Hugo Broos managed to build a strong team ahead of the AFCON but says he still has a lot of work to do. The team played an impressive game against South Sudan.
