The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State has retained its seat in ward 7 in Nala Municipality with an impressive majority during the by-elections held on Wednesday, 10 September 2025.
The ward was up for grabs when the former Councillor parted ways with the ANC, which led to by-elections. The ANC won the ward during the 2021 Municipal Elections with a 50.17% voter support. The by-elections on Wednesday showed that people still believe in the liberation party as it won by 54.32%.
Compared to the 2021 voter turnout of 53.19% in the ward, voters showed up in their numbers to cast their votes, the turnout improved drastically recording 63.14%, an indication that the ANC still has some public confidence heading into the local government elections in 2026.
Ward 7 had 2 830 registered voters who were to decide which way the by-elections will go. The ANC was contesting the by-elections alongside the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Nala Community Forum (NFC).
Anna Mathabo Mohapi of the ANC is now the new ward Councillor.
