ANC leaders revolting against the party

In trying to cleanse itself, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State province is facing serious challenges with some of its leaders who refuse to follow party protocol.

The Spokesperson for the ANC in the Free State Cde Thabo Meeko, confirmed with The Business Weekly that some of the leaders in the party are revolting against the corrective measures that the ANC has resolved on in trying to fix its municipalities.

Reports emerged that the Executive Mayor of Moqhaka Municipality Cllr Toy Mokatsane is refusing to step down as Mayor, as such; the ANC has revoked his membership from the party in order to force him to step down.

The ANC announced in August this year during a media briefing in Bloemfontein that it will be redeploying six of its Mayors from the poor performing municipalities. The party said Mafube, Moqhaka, Letsemeng, Nketoana, Nala and Letjeweleputswa are the municipalities affected.

Meeko said the liberation party is reshuffling Mayors, Council Speakers and Chiefs Whips in the mentioned municipalities to ensure political stability and service delivery in the respective municipalities as there is no financial discipline and accountability.

Asked about Mokatsane, Meeko said at the current moment, he cannot talk about issues of discipline before the ANC has satisfied itself in term of its constitution. He however affirmed that as soon as the disciplinary committee is done, the party will call a media briefing to take the public into its confidence.

Thabo Meeko said when it comes to the decision that the ANC took in August, there are leaders who are fighting the decision.

“What I can tell you now, is that there are those who are revolting and the ANC will look into evoking certain clauses of the constitution to see how we can deal with such,” said Meeko.

The Spokesperson further expressed his unhappiness with the behaviour of some ANC members and leaders, saying all members are subjected to ANC rules and regulations and to do otherwise is being un-ANC.

He said the letters that are making the rounds in public, are actually internal letters that have been leaked and such behaviour is proof in itself that members are not adhering to ANC principles and discipline, they are misbehaving.

“What they are doing goes against the ANC,” he concluded.
