
The Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Free State has kicked off its local elections preparations and has launched a province-wide Voting District (VD) Delimitation Revision Project to ensure that all voters are registered on time and vote at the correct designated voting station.
The country is gearing up for the Local Government Elections to take place later this year. The actual date is yet to be announced. While political parties are also getting ready, the Commission is assuring a smooth election.
According to the Spokesperson for the IEC in the Free State, Mmathabo Rasengane, the preparations follow the handover of newly determined ward boundaries by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) on 10 December 2025.
“The revised wards provide the Commission with an opportunity to realign voting district boundaries with updated municipal and ward configurations, as well as evolving settlement patterns across the province,” said Rasengane.

Rasengane explained that the project aims to ensure that all registered voters are assigned to voting districts that are: Geographically coherent and accessible, aligned with current demographic realities, and are supported by permanent, stable voting venues. She said particular emphasis is placed on improving voter access, reducing reliance on temporary structures such as tents, and strengthening the overall voting station network.
“The revision will be carried out through structured engagements with IEC officials at provincial, district, and local levels. Municipal Party Liaison Committees (MPLCs) will be consulted to provide input on proposed adjustments,” explained Mmathabo Rasengane.
The Spokesperson affirmed voters and stakeholders that the delimitation process is administrative in nature, conducted in line with the Electoral Act and applicable regulations. She said the initiative is designed to: strengthen electoral integrity, improve voter convenience, Ensure free, fair, and credible elections.
“The Commission calls on political parties and stakeholders to cooperate fully during consultations to support the successful implementation of the delimitation revision ahead of the 2026/27 Local Government Elections,” she appealed to political parties and stakeholders.
