The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) feels vindicated by the report of the United Nations (UN) Independent International Commission of Inquiry that found Israel guilty of genocide in Gaza.
According to the party it has before called for the closure of the Israeli Embassy in South Africa because of the genocide being committed in Gaza with the intent to completely destroy the Palestinian people.
The EFF says parliament did pass the resolution to shut down the Embassy, but to date, no action has been taken.
“It is not enough to pass resolutions in Parliament if the government refuses to act. With genocide now confirmed, symbolic gesture without concrete action are insufficient and amount to complicity,” said Sinawo Thambo, the Spokesperson for the EFF.
Thambo said the UN findings strengthen the EFF’s position on Israel, that it must be isolated, sanctioned and held accountable until it ceases its genocidal acts on Gaza.
“We call upon the South African government to immediately close the Israeli Embassy, impose diplomatic and economic isolation, and refuse to engage in any cooperation or normalisation until there is justice for Palestine,” said Thambo.
The EFF says it remains resolute on its position to stand with Palestine. The party acknowledges the report even though it feel it came too late for many, however, it provides a legal, moral and political foundation for global action. The party demands that the international community take action against what it terms ‘apartheid Israel’.
The EFF has since welcomed the report by the UN.
“We welcome this long-overdue confirmation because it reaffirms what the EFF has stated for years: that the horror being inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza is not a collateral by-product of war but a deliberate campaign with genocidal intent.
However, the delay in establishing these facts highlights the failure of international institutions to prevent or stop the on-going atrocities. Too many lives have been lost, too many homes destroyed, while the world watched and debated terminology,” said Sinawo Thambo.
