By PERTH — Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has rung the changes for Saturday’s blockbuster showdown against Australia, making 13 alterations to his starting XV following their triumphant Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry campaign.
As the world champions touch down in Western Australia, the spotlight will firmly fix on midfield powerhouse André Esterhuizen, who is set to etch his name into the history books as the 68th player to captain South Africa. Meanwhile, industrious number eight Jasper Wiese prepares to join the coveted 50-cap club off the replacements bench.
Fresh Faces and Proven Anchors
Erasmus has opted to balance a rejuvenated lineup with vital experience, retaining only veteran lock Eben Etzebeth and wing Ethan Hooker from the side that secured a gritty 43–28 victory over the All Blacks in Baltimore. Etzebeth’s appearance will be his 147th, further extending his record as the most-capped Springbok in history.
The starting pack features an entirely overhauled front row comprising Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Zachary Porthen, and hooker Johan Grobbelaar. They will pack down alongside Etzebeth and Franco Mostert in the engine room, while Paul de Villiers, Elrigh Louw, and Marco van Staden complete a dynamic loose trio.
In the backline, a new-look halfback partnership sees Herschel Jantjies paired with Handre Pollard, who returns to action after recovering from a niggle. Esterhuizen slots into the inside centre channel alongside Canan Moodie, with Hooker, Edwill van der Merwe, and Aphelele Fassi forming a lethal back three.

Erasmus emphasized that the changes are calculated to counter a dangerous and proud Australian outfit playing in front of their home crowd at Optus Stadium.
“Australia poses a completely different threat to New Zealand in the way they play, so we believe these combinations would be best suited for the challenge,” Erasmus noted. He also highlighted the decision to rest high-workload veterans Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende, allowing them crucial recovery time with their families.
