JOHANNESBURG — The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) welcomed a new addition to its expanding Actively Managed Exchange Traded Fund (AMETF) landscape on Monday, with Laurium Capital listing its flagship multi-asset strategy under the code LAUFFE.
The newly listed Laurium Flexible Prescient Feeder AMETF marks Laurium Capital’s debut in the exchange-traded arena. Rather than introducing a novel mandate, the firm has elected to list its established Laurium Flexible Prescient Fund—an active multi-asset strategy operational since February 2013—directly onto the JSE Main Board, making its track record accessible via a listed wrapper.
“This launch is about making an established Laurium investment strategy available to investors in a more accessible way,” said Brian Thomas, CEO and spokesperson for Laurium Capital. “The investment strategy has not changed. What has changed is how investors can access it.”
Flexibility Meets Inflation-Beating Targets
Underpinning the new AMETF is a mandate designed to navigate shifting macroeconomic cycles. The underlying portfolio deploys capital flexibly across local and foreign equities, bonds, money market instruments, and listed property.
The fund targets long-term capital growth with a clear benchmark: outperforming South Africa’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) plus 5% per annum over rolling three-year periods. By translating this objective into an AMETF structure, local investors gain intraday liquidity and exchange-traded convenience without sacrificing active asset allocation flexibility.
JSE’s AMETF Segment Gains Momentum
Adèle Hattingh, Specialist Securities Manager at the JSE, noted that the listing underscores structural shifts in local investor demands.
“The continued growth of the AMETF market reflects increasingly sophisticated investor demand for greater choice and diversification,” Hattingh said. “The JSE remains focused on enabling product innovation that responds to evolving investor needs, while providing transparent, regulated and tradable access to a wider range of investment opportunities.”
Since the JSE first introduced regulatory amendments in 2023 to accommodate actively managed strategies, the AMETF segment has expanded significantly. Issuers have progressively broadened the market to encompass income funds, multi-asset portfolios, sustainability mandates, artificial intelligence exposures, and specialized sector plays.
With the inclusion of Laurium’s feeder fund, the broader JSE exchange ecosystem now hosts 144 ETFs, commanding a combined market capitalization exceeding R272 billion. As institutional and retail demand for transparent, liquid, and actively managed vehicles continues to climb, listings like LAUFFE highlight the ongoing evolution of South Africa’s capital markets.
