Tensions have escalated in the Middle East region and have the world watching from the edges of their seats. The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres has condemned the attacks by Iran targeting Israel.
News broke Saturday evening 13 April 2024, of the Islamic Republic of Iran launching hundreds of drones and missiles targeting Israel in what seems to be a retaliatory attack following Israel’s attack on Iran’s Embassy in Damascus, Syria, on 1 April 2024.
A number of world leaders have since come out expressing concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East, calling for all parties to show restraint. America on the other hand, has re-affirmed its support for Israel and has given them military support.
According to the President of America, Joe Biden, the country deployed some of its finest to help Israel defend itself.
“At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week. Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our service members, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles,” said Biden.
The Secretary General of the UN António Guterres expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East region condemning the attacks of Iran targeting Israel. Guterres said in his statement that the world does not need another war.
“I strongly condemn the serious escalation represented by the large-scale attack launched on Israel by the Islamic Republic of Iran this evening. I call for an immediate cessation of these hostilities.
I am deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation. I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East. I have repeatedly stressed that neither the region nor the world can afford another war,” said Guterres.
The UN Security Council convened an urgent meeting to discuss the situation unfolding in the Middle East, both ambassadors of Israel and Iran were present and each presented their case defending their own. None is backing down, instead the discussion have turned into a blame game and each point out how the other violated the UN charter and international laws.
Israel is adamant that it will defend itself and warned that it is not a frog in a pot of slow boiling water, it will strike back.
